Ports of Call

Many travelers will be happy to go with the flow. We like carefree holidays, but having spent many hours sat on a bed reading a guide book in a far off land, trying to decide what to do the next day, I take a realistic view and know that to be able to relax and choose to see the highlights we want to it is necessary to plan ahead.

I knew little about the areas we are going to and have spent many days researching the internet to come up with the easiest overview of the interesting sites and public transport options to enable a comparison to organised tours.

Rome (Civitavecchia)

Sicily (Messina)

Greece (Athens/Piraeus)

Turkey (Kusadasi/Ephesus)

Greece (Crete/Souda)

Although I haven’t used the company http://www.cruisingexcursions.com has seemed to offer better value than the cruise line organised tours.

I have used advertised tours and reviews as the basis to decide where we are going, and then looked at local options to achieve a similar trip. I cannot make any recommendations for tours but if you are on our cruise (27/10) you are welcome to join the Private tours I have booked. Space allowing.

Royal Caribbean suggest tips on shore at the rate shown.

Tour Director: USD 3.00 (or CAD/EUR equivalent) a day per guest
Coach Driver: USD 2.50 (or CAD/EUR equivalent) a day per guest
Train Carriage Host: USD 1.00 (or CAD/EUR equivalent) a day per guest
Waiting Staff: USD 2.50 (or CAD/EUR equivalent) a day per guest

When we get home, I will write a post for each day showing what we actually did and what worked and didn’t work for us.

If fellow travelers would like to add their experiences, please email me your text and photos at uk.dave.woods@gmail.com or ask me how to Post by email.
